What it means

Older AI mostly classified things: is this email spam, is this transaction fraud. Generative AI produces something new: a post, a reply, a headshot, a video script, a spreadsheet formula.

It works by learning patterns from enormous amounts of examples, then generating fresh output that follows those patterns. Text generators are large language models; image generators are usually diffusion models.

How to use it

• Use it for first drafts, not final drafts. Edit the output so it sounds like you.
• Give it raw material: your notes, a transcript, a past post you liked. Generative AI is much better at reshaping your ideas than inventing them.
• Try the same request two or three times. Each run is different, and the best answer is often the second or third.
