FTP / SFTP
File Transfer Protocol
In one sentenceWays to upload and download files to a server. SFTP is the secure version; plain FTP sends everything, passwords included, unencrypted.
What it means
FTP is the old standard for moving website files to a server, often with an app like FileZilla. SFTP does the same job over SSH, so it is encrypted and uses the same login.
Many web hosts and WordPress setups still offer FTP. Today AI agents usually upload files over SSH/SFTP or deploy through Git & GitHub.
How to use it
- Use SFTP, not plain FTP, whenever you have the choice.
- If an AI tool needs to upload your site, give it SFTP access to that one site's folder only.
