Git & GitHub
In one sentenceGit keeps a full history of every change to your project's files; GitHub stores that history online so it is backed up and shareable.
What it means
Git is version control: every time you save a "commit", it records exactly what changed, so you can see who changed what and roll back mistakes. GitHub is a website (owned by Microsoft) that hosts Git projects, called repositories or repos.
When AI writes code for you, Git is your undo button. If the AI breaks something, you go back to the last version that worked.
How to use it
- Ask your AI coding agent to commit after each working change, with a clear message.
- Keep repos private unless you mean to share them, and never commit passwords or .env files.
- GitHub can also host simple websites for free (GitHub Pages).
