JPG / JPEG
In one sentenceThe most common photo format. Small files, good for photos, but it loses a little quality each save and has no transparent background.
What it means
JPG (also JPEG) compresses images by throwing away detail your eye barely notices. That keeps photos small, which is why cameras, phones and websites use it.
Its sibling PNG keeps every pixel and supports transparency, but files are bigger. Newer formats such as WebP and HEIC (iPhone photos) do the same job with smaller files.
How to use it
- Use JPG for photos and headshots; use PNG for logos, screenshots and anything with text or a transparent background.
- AI image tools often output PNG or WebP. Convert to JPG if a site needs smaller files.
- Photos can carry hidden EXIF data, sometimes including GPS location. Strip it before posting if that matters.
