What it means
On its own, a model can only write. With tool use, it can decide "I need to look this up" or "I need to check the calendar", call that tool, read the result and continue.
Tool use is what turns a chatbot into an AI Agent. MCP is a standard way to give AI access to tools.
How to use it
- Turn on web search when you need current facts.
- Turn on the code or analysis tool when you upload a spreadsheet, so the AI calculates instead of guessing.
